SAVE THE DATE – Michigan Indian Family Preservation Act: New Indian Child Welfare Legislation
In this program, state and tribal court experts will team up to guide participants through an introduction and overview of the recently enacted Michigan Indian Family Preservation Act (MIFPA). This training opportunity will provide information on the historical background of the new law, clarification of certain federal Indian Child Welfare Act provisions and definitions, and how child welfare professionals can comply with the MIFPA. The program will feature Chief Tribal Court Judge Allie Maldonado and Washtenaw Circuit Court Judge Timothy Connors and will include a facilitated group discussion to allow participants to engage in a constructive dialogue about the policy and practice implications of the groundbreaking new law.
Target Audience: Judges, referees, attorneys for children and parents, and caseworkers for the Michigan Department of Human Services, tribes, and private agencies.
